Oh my…

Today started so very long ago…

We knew this day was coming…when Maddie’s horse, “King”, needed to go in for surgery.  King was diagnosed, a few months ago, with a restricted airway.  This tough guy has been a trooper, performing (over-the-moon) with limited capacity.  Well, today, he took the first step on his road to recovery…

The girls & I woke up early and made our way to the barn.  Both Maddie & Mallory saddled up their horses for the usual, casual Monday morning hack.  I procured provisions for the 2½ drive (one way) to the hospital & the girls packed King’s suitcase for his week-long stay (if all goes well).  We loaded up King into the trailer & began our journey…

King will be treated at Pioneer Equine Hospital in Oakdale, California.  Pioneer is a premiere facility that we are fortunate to have available to us within driving distance.  King’s surgery will take place this Wednesday afternoon.  If all goes well, we can bring him home on Saturday.

I cannot begin to describe, here in this little blog, Maddie & King’s extraordinary bond.  If you do not know them you cannot appreciate how difficult these next few days will be…

As I was driving home tonight, dinner was not even a thought…we just wanted to be home.  I had scheduled a soup and salad that I knew would be comforting (something we definitely needed tonight) but I did not think that we would be getting home so late.  The dinner rescue is attributed to my wonderful husband who stepped in to save the day.  Michael logged in to my blog, got the recipe & made the chowder and salad!

It is amazing how a family meal can be so comforting.  We left a part of ourselves at Pioneer when we left King today and we won’t feel whole again until he is home.  But, tonight, we will enjoy our soup knowing that relief for him is imminent.

I have no photos of dinner tonight but I leave you with one of my favorite pictures of Maddie & King…
