Still basking in the joy of having successfully posted my FIRST weekly menu last night, I decided to indulge myself with a Saturday morning trip to the San Francisco Ferry Building today. An added treat was that my husband came along & we made it a date! Most ladies I know would relish the chance to stroll the streets of San Francisco & shop in all those beautiful boutiques this city has to offer…as for me, my fancy is the Saturday morning Farmers Market. All of that glorious produce, the smell of freshly baked bread, beautiful cheese and tiny jars gleaming with jewel-toned preserves & jellies. It doesn’t take long for something to catch my eye that will make it back and find a spot on our weekly dinner menu…today it was mushrooms! Strolling by Far West Fungi, a certain varietal caught my eye – the Shimeji mushroom…
So much more attractive than most mushrooms, almost bloom-like. After speaking with the mushroom guru I discovered that this softly textured mushroom takes on a velvet quality when sauteed…I was hooked! I picked up three other varieties (brown button, chanterelle & shiitake) for a dish, Mushrooms with Soy Butter, which I will serve later this week over pasta.
After dutifully shopping with me for fungi & other dinner provisions, Michael was ready to be rewarded with lunch. Since this was a date, we opted for white linen napkins over the take-and-eat kiosk food choices (although wonderful) sprawled out before us. We made our way through the Saturday afternoon crowd and settled at a table for two at the Slanted Door. Beautiful sunshine, a fabulous view of the bay and a light lunch made the perfect setting for us to catch up after a hectic week & simply enjoy each other’s company.
Slanted Door’s Imperial Rolls & a glass of slightly sparkling rose.
