The drought here in California persists.  The crystal clear blue skies, which usually hover over the San Francisco Bay, have been painted with a milky haze, more often than not, this winter…yesterday was an exception.  Still unseasonably warm, a light breeze cleared the air a bit creating a day meant to be spent outside.  The girls had their riding lessons up at the barn, while Michael, Max & I decided to take a familiar hike across the Golden Gate Bridge.

Now, if you start from one of the visitor/tourist centers located at either end of the bridge, you will be walking just under 3 1/2 miles round trip {1.7 miles in each direction} but we like to begin our hike far below the bridge, in the vicinity of Fort Baker & Travis Marina within the Marin Headlands.

You can follow a road {not open to unauthorized vehicles} which takes you to a parking lot where cyclists begin and end their ride across the bridge.  This road winds a bit and is pretty steep, a favorite for cyclists to race down at some very high speeds so you need to pay attention as a pedestrian.  You journey underneath the bridge and then make the climb up along the other side.

While I love this walk, there is one spot that, for lack of a better word, “freaks” me out every time…the walkway you must cross {directly beneath traffic} to get to the pedestrian walkway side of the bridge.  It is incredibly noisy from the traffic and dark with only a thin chain link fence separating the concrete walkway from the depths below.  Michael & Max got quite the chuckle watching me bolt through this tunnel yesterday.  I am serious people…I HATE this tunnel!

The views, while walking the bridge itself, are breathtaking and the time it takes to cross the bridge, in one direction, is between 20-30 minutes {walking at an energetic pace} and the actual time is quite dependent of the volume of foot traffic on any given day. We stopped half-way across to enjoy the view for a moment.

A GREAT way to spend a weekend afternoon!

As for this week’s menu, I will keep it short since I have rambled on long enough.  Some of our favorites from the recipe archives are revisited and I have linked them in the menu above to the original posts, so simply click on the name of the dish to be taken to the recipe.  As for the new recipes, check back here later in the week to see how they turn out.

I hope you all enjoy the rest of your weekend & have a wonderful week ahead!
